We launched our new Talking Maps, in celebration of Israel's 54th Independence Day.
This new Gems feature enables surfers to hear the correct Hebrew pronunciation, of places in Israel.
About the Spellings on Our Maps:
Anyone who has ever been to Israel (and tried to use a map or atlas)
knows that it can be quite frustrating. Often, you will find at least 4-5 different
spellings, for the same place. In fact, on recent visit to a particular attraction
we found two different spellings for the site, right within their own audiovisual
presentation! Often, the name of a place will be listed one way on a map, another
way on a road sign, and a third way by the place itself. At Gems in Israel we
have taken the approach of trying to adopt the actual spellings used
by the various places listed on our maps. However, some variations may still exist.
About the Pronunciations:
As you may know, for many words (including the names of places)
there is a common and a proper way of pronouncing certain words. For our
maps, we have chosen to use the proper pronunciations, rather than the common ones.
How to Use Gems in Israel's Talking Maps:
If your computer has a sound card and
speakers, please make sure the volume
is turned on. Then, simply place your
cursor on the name you want to hear. When
the cursor changes and appears as a
'hand' - click to hear the pronunciation.
