If you want to know the beginnings of the first Hebrew City, Tel Aviv, you have to know (today's) Rothschild Boulevard. This is where Ahuzat Bayit (as the new neighborhood was called, before its name was changed to Tel Aviv) began. The street is named for Baron Binyamin Edmond de Rothschild, who was instrumental in settling Eretz Israel in the 19th century, through massive land purchase initiatives and a verity of other ventures. Rothschild Boulevard's cross streets were named for some notable movers and shakers and historical figures.
As Tel Aviv celebrates its inscription by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site it's interesting to learn about the people for whom some of Rothschild Boulevard's side streets were named, especially since the boulevard is lined with a huge preponderance of early International Style buildings. Walk along the street, enjoy the architecture and take care to read the cross street names, you'll find a varied cast of characters who were immortalized by the city's founding father's.
