Caesarea International Opera Festival

A new opera festival will be held in May and June at the Roman amphitheater in Caesarea. Located on the coast, near Kibbutz Sdot Yam, halfway between Haifa and Tel Aviv the amphitheater will provide a very unique setting for the festival.

Caesarea and its harbor (considered to be the first modern harbor) were built by Herod the Great. The harbor was built in 22 BCE.

Planned as an annual event, this first festival will feature Richard Strauss' Greek tragedy, Elektra, (for the first time in Israel) and Puccini's Chinese opera Turnadot. The festival will close with a symphonic concert with Jessye Norman, featuring music from Verdi to Duke Ellington. Elektra is directed by Rina Yerushalmi and designed by David Sharir and Judy Levin. Turandot is directed and designed by the celebrated Argentinean director Hugo De Ana. Both productions are conducted by the New Israeli Opera Music Director Asher Fisch, and will feature internationally famous opera singers such as Mary Jane Johnson, Tina Kiberg, Gaby Sadeh and others.

In addition to the operatic productions there will also be sunset chamber music concerts in cooperation with the Jerusalem Music Center Mishkenot Sha'ananim.
