Golan Heights Winery
by Yael Zisling

There is no disputing the fact that the real turning point in Israeli winemaking (in terms of quality) is largely due to the Golan Heights Winery, which was founded in 1983. This winery re-wrote the book on making wine in a land where winemaking is as old as the bible itself.

If you are planning to visit the Golan Heights, you can take a one-hour tour, at the winery's expansive Visitors Center. What the place lacks in charm it more than makes up for, in sheer professionalism and attention to detail throughout the tour. This is after all, a big business whose wines are exported to 25 countries.

Tours are by reservation only and it is best to call a few days in advance. The tour includes an introductory movie, a visit to the oak barrel cellar, a viewing of the bottling line (dependant on production schedules) and a wine tasting.

Non-Hebrew speakers should mention that they are interested in an English tour (or inquire about other languages). For additional information see, Israel's Wine Awaking.

Golan Heights Winery is located two kilometers from the center of Katzrin, in the Katzrin Industrial Area.
