Ancient Synagogues around the Sea of Galilee - (2 1/2 -3 hours Driving & Walking)

Available as a private tour for up to five people or for larger groups,
contact us for details.

For those interested in archaeological sites, ruins, the enchanting Galilee, beautiful Roman Era mosaics and the history of the Jews in Eretz Yisrael after the destruction of the second Temple in Jerusalem.

We will explore the ancient Jewish fishing village of Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee. At its center is a beautiful 4th Century Synagogue built over the ruins of a 1st Century Synagogue. We will examine the various buildings that span the time period from the 2nd Century BCE through the Byzantine Era.

Next we will stop at the museum at Kibbutz Ginnosar where a boat dating to the 1st century CE was miraculously uncovered just a few years ago. Due to a long drought and the receding shoreline of the Sea of Galilee a wooden beam was found sticking out of the muck along the shore. Archeologists where called in and one of the most impressive treasures ever uncovered in the Land of Israel is now preserved at the kibbutz museum.

Lastly we will visit the National Park of Hammat Tiberias. Among the antiquities in this unique site are the 6th Century city wall, a museum focusing on the ancient hot springs and the jewel of the city, the 4th Century Synagogue with its exquisite mosaic floor.

Optional Additional Track at the end of the First Track: A nice easy stroll along the Jordan River starting at Yardenit parking lot. This is a beautiful leisurely walk along the banks of the Jordan River under the shade of various kings of endemic and imported trees. Stop along the banks of the river for a swim or picnic.

Level of Difficulty: Easy

Comments: Explore how synagogues evolved during and directly after the destruction of the Temple in the Land of Israel. This tour, which features sites that have both Jewish and Christian significance, is a great interfaith tour.

Suitability: For all. No stairs or long walks.

Comments: This tour is designed for people who plan on renting a car (the guide will meet you at a predetermined point), or as part of a fully day tour.
